Library Media Specialist Responsibilities (General)

  1. Supervise and evaluate staff, student aides and volunteers
  2. Teach lessons to students and teachers/schedule classes
  3. Set long term goals for library
  4. Assist with school wide goals like NCA and Prop. 301
  5. Order books, capital items, and supplies
  6. Weed/discard materials
  7. Check student passes with other library staff
  8. Supervise computer labs
  9. Teach book repair
  10. Inventory with other library staff
  11. Reading and dusting of shelves
  12. Budget-capital, supplies, and bookstore
  13. Catalog items without records available
  14. Order supplies
  15. Set up displays with other library staff
  16. Organize activities to promote circulation and the library with other library staff
  17. Update Web page
  18. Discipline students
  19. Attend department chair meetings
  20. Collect data to improve library use
  21. Prepare year-end report
  22. Cover when staff are absent
  23. Lock up and shut down if last to leave

Library Assistant’s Responsibilities (General)



  1. Opening up library and all the entails (turning on lights, front computers, and copy machine, picking up newspapers from back, unlocking doors, checking bathrooms and voice messages)
  2. Circulation (adding and deleting patrons, collecting fines, checking in and out materials, holding materials, student withdrawals)
  3. Shelving materials (magazines, books, videos) with the help of others
  4. Processing magazines and displaying them
  5. Notifying librarian of any problems receiving magazines
  6. Reading and dusting shelves with other staff
  7. Scheduling classes and leaving notes in teachers’ boxes the night before they are scheduled
  8. Notifying students and teachers if holds are ready
  9. Checking student passes
  10. Monitoring student behavior and providing discipline when needed
  11. Assisting students, teachers, and patrons with locating materials
  12. Asking for help from colleagues when needed
  13. Helps supervise student aides
  14. Inventory/weeds with other staff
  15. Organizes bulletin boards and displays
  16. Waters plants weekly
  17. Helps promote library
  18. Notifies appropriate librarian of items requested
  19. Attends meetings and in-services when asked
  20. Works as a crucial member of the team
  21. Follows the supervisory chart (chain of command) when issues arise
  22. Runs overdue notices with other staff
  23. Deposits money at bookstore from fines and copier monthly and get change when needed for front desk
  24. Records 3M gate count Monday am and Friday pm
  25. Sends books to library clerk for repair
  26. Monthly story times with preschool
  27. Closing down and locking up if last to leave
  28. Performs duties as assigned by librarian

Library Clerk/Media Technician’s Responsibilities

The library clerk’s workday consists of eight (8) work hours and a thirty-minute lunch. The library clerk is responsible for the cataloging and processing materials in accordance with district’s job description.

  1. Checking-in new items and marking received and date on purchase order
  2. Sending receipts to accounting and keeping track of money on blanket PO’s
  3. Processing items (Follett, barcodes, labels, pockets, bug, cover) to be checked by back librarian before going on shelves
  4. Writing thank you notes with tax deduction information for donations
  5. Repairing items if it is possible
  6. Notifying back librarian if book is beyond repair
  7. Discarding books under supervision of back librarian
  8. Checking mail and delivering to library staff
  9. Reading and dusting shelves with other staff
  10. Inventory/weed with other staff
  11. Helps with promotion of library
  12. Covering front desk or other areas when needed (library assistant is at lunch, during library assistant’s off desk work 1 hour a day, after-school tutoring if applicable, and some hours if library assistant is absent at the request of a librarian). This position is never responsible to open the library. The library assistant will open and if she is not present a librarian will open.
  13. Help covering the floor/lab during tutoring (out of office, circulating, and visible to students during the entire tutoring time)
  14. Check-in and check-out of audiovisual equipment (VCR, boom box, camcorder, tripod)
  15. Helping Bill Maginnis with audiovisual tasks when needed
  16. Helping school administration, faculty, staff and students with audiovisual equipment when needed
  17. Monitoring student behavior and providing discipline when needed
  18. Asking for help from colleagues when needed
  19. Runs overdue notices with front librarian
  20. Assists students, teachers, and patrons with locating materials
  21. Notifies appropriate librarian of items requested
  22. Attends meetings and in-services
  23. Works as a crucial member of the team
  24. Addresses any problems with this position to back librarian then follows chain of command if the issue is not resolved
  25. Closing down and locking up if last to leave
